About the Artist: CS Goss
Southern California-based visual artist CS Goss has been creating his expressive sculptures and paintings since the early 1970s following his art studies at California State University, Fresno. His mother, also an artist, was a great influence in his life and introduced him to art at an early age. Throughout his life he supported his family while sustaining his artistic creation working as a journeyman carpenter, which gave insight into form and structure in three dimensions.
CS Goss’s paintings became increasingly influenced by his facility with the tools and skills of carpentry tradesmen, moving from traditional painting methods and applications to works making use of various materials such as wood and found objects, and using power tools and roller brayers to apply paint with depth and textures in his unique style. His artworks are often formed from assembled pieces which are then covered with a clear resin evoking in his works a sensation of a moment imbedded in time. His two-dimensional works are on board and canvas using a combination of epoxies, inks, pencil, acrylic, and oil paints.
CS Goss’s recent works reference historical artists and their images, ideas, and themes to incorporate them into the context of today’s times, a period marked by doubt, confusion, and human conflict. His social commentary art provides an alternate sometimes satiric view on the cross-current of paradigms of who we are and where we are headed as human beings. Acknowledging that some of his work itself is challenging and interpretive, Goss believes in the power of presenting powerful images in the minds of the observer to inspire a more nuanced understanding of a world often seen in divisions of black and white.
Referencing famous art of the past with Goss’s unique vision and take on the spirit of our times prompts the viewer to question whether humankind has evolved or devolved. Daisaku Ikeda, his Buddhist mentor in life, has taught him that developing a positive and optimistic life condition despite the difficulties he has faced will manifest in his art. The combination of a positive and optimistic life condition with his technical approach is what truly resonates with people.
